As the only product course in SAM, the Individual Lending course is based on the IL Toolkit and will provide a hands-on, practical experience in understanding lending, assessing clients’ non-financial and financial applications, enhancing credit decision-making skills, and knowing how to properly build a relationship with a client. It explores areas of improvement with respect to bringing greater efficiencies to the entire process. The Individual Lending Toolkit is made up of ten sessions, which will be taught over the course of 5 days. Some of the key sessions include:
Instructs trainees on the importance of the process map to make sure lending is completed efficiently and precisely.
This session will takes you to the village of Mtwapa where trainees will actually put what they learned in the classroom into practice. Trainees will work in groups to evaluate a pre-selected business whilst being guided by the Faculty and SAM staff. It is a great way to learn and a wonderful day out in the village – out of the classroom! Then the trainees will present the case to the ‘credit committee’ (made up of other trainees) back at the ‘SAM MFI’.
Lending is not complete after the client receives the money! This session builds upon the fact that a ‘Good loans can go bad without follow up and bad loans can go good with proper follow up’. Tips and tools to institute best practices at your MFI will be the goal of this session.
Exercises, case studies, tools, discussions, and field work are methods that will be applied during this course.
